May Flower Challenge Day Twenty-one • Purple and Pink

Found some lovely lilacs in the garden that smelled heavenly. I decided to bring the fragrance in with a fun arrangement mix with pink rhodies and some mint leaves. An old milk bottle keeps the look rustic and not too fussy for day twenty-one of the May Flower Challenge.

May Flower Challenge Day Fifteen • Twigs and Blossoms

Here is my final piece at 18 x24. Follow my post photos and you can see my steps from start to finish.

How things started at my desk this morning. I knew I wanted to build my blossoms on the twigs so I used acrylic ink and painted the blossoms with waterclolors.

Twigs as my base, this image has been in my head all week, so glad to put it on paper.

A great start, I was going to stop here and finish tomorrow but I was inspired to finish as I saw the lovliness in the buds develop in paint.

Pink Blossoms for day fifteen of the May Flower Challenge . Really enjoyed getting the paints out again after a week not painting.

Flowers, Paint and Type

Inspiration from a very old gardening issue of Martha Stewart Magazine. I kept it because I am such an allium fan. My problem is that I never plant the bulbs when I am suppose to in the fall and I end up buying plants when gardening season comes around.

Decided to paint my alliums with watercolors instead of gouache. I find myself turning to watercolors more and more lately....not sure why...I do find them to be fun, easy, not fussy and unexpected. I feel as if I am sketching in color.

I wanted to play with some script type because the word allium has fun letters for painting with a bit of rhythm in stroke.

I love the combination of type and art.

A variation on the allium watercolor with some line work added to give a different feel to the of the flower artwork. Not as soft but a bit more modern in feel.

Watercolor...Where Red Orange Pink and Yellow meet.

I was inspired by a rich and warm color palette found in a scarf, pantone chips and my youngest sons memory game cards. I made a sketch of a thistle like flower during a morning drawing exercise yesterday. I brought them both together to make a lovely print.

Test prints of flower layered on watercolor background. They sit beautifully together.

Pencil, ink and watercolors proved to be great combinations.

Pencil and ink for the thistle like flowers to keep that hand drawn sketch and loose feel.
