Blogging in real time...Me and Nigella

Wasn't planning on posting tonight but the kids were off to bed and I happen to have some supplies in the house and I had to paint. Flower ideas have been swirling in my head the last few days. I have a travel supply bag that I carry from the studio to the house and then from the house to the studio......

I had some black gouache and a large pad of watercolor paper.

I took advantage of the quiet and decided to start sketching with a pencil and a brush.

I sketched Nigella Damascena also known as Love in a Mist. A lovely and stunning flower.

Working on 24 x 18 so this will frame up nicely.

Will decide on color and medium tomorrow.

Oil stick,watercolor or gouache? I will sleep on it!

Flowers, Paint and Type

Inspiration from a very old gardening issue of Martha Stewart Magazine. I kept it because I am such an allium fan. My problem is that I never plant the bulbs when I am suppose to in the fall and I end up buying plants when gardening season comes around.

Decided to paint my alliums with watercolors instead of gouache. I find myself turning to watercolors more and more lately....not sure why...I do find them to be fun, easy, not fussy and unexpected. I feel as if I am sketching in color.

I wanted to play with some script type because the word allium has fun letters for painting with a bit of rhythm in stroke.

I love the combination of type and art.

A variation on the allium watercolor with some line work added to give a different feel to the of the flower artwork. Not as soft but a bit more modern in feel.

Word Path • Just Three Words for International Women"s Day

My Word Paths for today

In honor of International Women's Day

I have always loved this quote from Whoopi Goldberg as Celie in the Color Purple,

Celie: [on leaving the farm in Shug's car, shouting to Albert]

" I'm poor, black, I might even be ugly, but dear God, I'm here. I'm here".

I think about those last two words a lot, "I'm here" and that inspired today's work "i am here". Simply said, says so much. The importance of being here as a woman and to honor and respect those who came before us.

Working out of my Comfort Zone, I am Embracing Magenta

What I have been working on this week....

Getting started and the art is leading the way. What started as a cityscape is looking more like the seaside with a cabana feel. I am using gouache, which I love as you know. Smooth, flat and forgiving.

Deciding on a color palette.

COLOR INSPIRATION

I loved how this pink was flanked by my two favorite colors on the grocery store shelf. This is where my color choices began

When I started to think about painting I took my color Inspiration from Harney and Sons tea canisters and a vintage 1967 book by Dahlov Ipcar, The Song of The Day Birds and The Night Birds. My color palette always has a familiar orange and powder blue. I reached out of my comfort zone towards a more pinkish color finally settling on magenta/ fuchsia.
