May Flower Challenge Day Eight • Sketches to Regroup and Refresh after the Show

A board full of sketches for day eight of the May Flower Challenge . In getting ready for a show its go, go, go creating and pouring yourself into your work. So what happens after the show?? The first day back is a do nothing day then it back to drawing and sketching, going back to creative basics, reconnecting.This has been my routine for as long as I can remember.

Love in a Mist...... My Sweet Nigella is Finished

Here is where I began you can see the start of Nigella and the original post here. Black gouache and my Sumi brush.

I left off undecided in what direction to go with in regards to medium. In the end I decided on oil stick, watercolor, pencil and gouache. The painting has an engraved look and feel to it.My goal was a solid deep midnight sky blue for the background. When I finished I wanted a smooth, flat and more solid background so I created the background and the color digitally for my final piece to post .

Blogging in real time...Me and Nigella

Wasn't planning on posting tonight but the kids were off to bed and I happen to have some supplies in the house and I had to paint. Flower ideas have been swirling in my head the last few days. I have a travel supply bag that I carry from the studio to the house and then from the house to the studio......

I had some black gouache and a large pad of watercolor paper.

I took advantage of the quiet and decided to start sketching with a pencil and a brush.

I sketched Nigella Damascena also known as Love in a Mist. A lovely and stunning flower.

Working on 24 x 18 so this will frame up nicely.

Will decide on color and medium tomorrow.

Oil stick,watercolor or gouache? I will sleep on it!

Watercolor...Where Red Orange Pink and Yellow meet.

I was inspired by a rich and warm color palette found in a scarf, pantone chips and my youngest sons memory game cards. I made a sketch of a thistle like flower during a morning drawing exercise yesterday. I brought them both together to make a lovely print.

Test prints of flower layered on watercolor background. They sit beautifully together.

Pencil, ink and watercolors proved to be great combinations.

Pencil and ink for the thistle like flowers to keep that hand drawn sketch and loose feel.
