Let's Fly Blog Hop...Have a visit!

Hello and welcome to the Let's Fly Blog Hop
Our Theme is Let's Fly and we will be using  Emerald the 2013 Pantone color of the year in our mini collection. You are probably stopping in from  Lesley Todd's lovely blog, Finch Five.
I hope you enjoyed her beautiful, aviation and travel inspired designs. If you want to start at the beginning of the hop please visit Gill Eggleston's blog called Pattern Addict.

My name is Deborah Velásquez. I am an artist-designer with a passion for creating art.
I work both traditionally and digitally. I have a love for printmaking and silk screening.
The mix of design, words and crafts light me up. Some of my favorite things are, coffee, magazines, art books, a sharpie and a sketchbook.

Bird sketches were at the start of the process, it was the lined bird drawings that inspired the initial carved block for the prints I planed to make.

Carving and testing.

Putting the blocks to the test. The lines are solid, strong and graphic. I had these test sheets out while I made more sketches and carved more blocks. I ended up with four pieces to work with. It inspired me and I was able to play with different ideas and layout.
Instead of printing the design with ink on paper i scanned my motifs into the computer to finalize my patterns.

 Color Inspiration

I pulled out color chips. novelty papers and a a watercolor piece of mine in order to find colors that sat well with Emerald Green. Here are some sophisticated and fun combinations
 I played with.

My Designs
My Blocks Inspired these designs. A nice combination of traditional and digital.

A Table Takes Flight • Final Print inspired by George Nelson Furniture

The modern appearance of Dragonflies,
tail to tail forming a ribbon in flight.
When a piece is finished,
the art is seen and felt.

Sometimes the direction one starts is not necessarily where one ends up.
See original inspiration and sketches in my two previous posts here and here.
My clean modern lines went organic as the carving tools made their own course.
I love handmade pieces and its imperfections.

Thanks for stopping by!

Relief Print Inspired by George Nelson • Part Two

New relief print artwork inspired by George Nelson furniture.

I played with yesterday's sketches to plan the positive and negative areas of the design.
I transferred my design to a large block, thinking I would carve a large design but I thought it would be best to simplify and keep the design small and to be honest I was impatient. I saw the beauty immediately while carving and I wanted to get the print on paper!

My first test print, black ink on Bristol paper. Beautifully organic. I went from my more modern drawings, sketches and inspiration to a more folkloric, even primitive design feel. I will do more printing today on a larger scale. I see beautiful repeat possibilities. Stop in tomorrow to see what beauty is in store with this design.

Thanks for stopping by!
