Word Path • Magic

Brush Play • The Script Sessions

I had the opportunity to teach a workshop this past Thursday at the Farmington Valley Arts Center, in Avon. I am lucky enough to have a studio there and can share my creative experiences with so many talented artist there. I shared some of my Word Art techniques and concentrated on the scripted word using a Sumi Brushes. We made some fun and amazing art and I know everyone in attendance had a chance to "see" words differently.

At the end of the workshop I was introduced to Anna Murfin, fine artist & ceramicist who stopped in to join the group in the scripted workshop. She brought some fantastic tools, she brought handmade bamboo brushes, made with animal hair. There was fox, moose and hound. Here are some pics of the brushes she used to make her word art. I had the opportunity to try them and they were "magical". I found new tools and found the magic.
I created my Word Path art about finding the magic using these brushes.
If you are interested in making your own brushes, check out this link, here.

Everyone has a word path. One word leads to another.

Word Paths have  been a Friday feature showcasing possibilities in written words, creative process and artistic pieces from the beginning of my blog You can go here, to my first post on this project and see how it all started.

Here is My Word Path for Today,
two versions in a sea of fun color.

Find the Magic was inspired by words of advice shared by Lilla Rogersone of the world’s top illustration agents. I have taken her wonderful Make Art That Sells courses and I am currently enrolled in The Make Art That Sells Assignments Bootcamp. Lilla said no matter what the assignment or brief you are given, even if you are uninspired by the topic and are not "feeling it" you need to be positive and find the magic.
I think these words can be applied to everything in life.
Go find the "magic".

May Flower Challenge Day Eight • Sketches to Regroup and Refresh after the Show

 My floral sketch board.

Flower sketch board by Velásquez©2013

A board full of sketches for day eight of the May Flower Challenge . In getting ready for a show its go, go, go creating and pouring yourself into your work. So what happens after the show?? The first day back is a do nothing day then it back to drawing and sketching, going back to creative basics, reconnecting. This has been my routine for as long as I can remember.

For the  May Flower Challenge you can post your flower creation, whether it is a doodle, drawing, photograph, collage or painting. This challenge has been started by Lori Moon, fellow blogger, talented photographer and jewelry artisan. Sign up and join in on the flower fun. Can't wait to see what you create as well! Please note: You do NOT have to participate every day. Play along on a specific day each week or only once - whatever inspires you.
Join the challenge, here, it is going to be fun.

I love this challenge not because I have a love for drawing, painting and printing flowers but it is an excellent way to build up your motif library. It also keeps your drawing hand in motion and the creative flow becomes a part of your being.

Thank you for stopping by.

Sketching as Deadlines Loom, "The Sketchbook Project"

I have signed up for a local sketchbook project and have been busy filling my Moleskine sketchbook with my beloved flower motifs. What I love about projects such as these is that they give you so much material for future designs. If you need to build your motif design library I highly recommend signing for a Sketchbook Project. Whether it is the one from Brooklyn, New York or through your local Arts organization, it is so worth it! I did the New York one back in 2011, you can view it here if you would like.
I have been playing a lot with vine type line. These make great backgrounds for large layered florals in Surface Pattern Design

Sketching with Paint and Ink

Hot Chips and Ink              by Velasquez©2013
Enjoying a bit of ink play with a small painting I made a few days ago. I posted it on Instagram. I have been inspired by a warm palette lately.

Added my tried and true blue to cool things down a bit and loved the colors together.

I enjoy filing my sketchbook with ideas. I am so looking forward to see how this one turns out. Hot Chips and Ink is just the start!

Watercolor...Where Red Orange Pink and Yellow meet.

I was inspired by a rich and warm color palette found in a scarf, pantone chips and my youngest sons memory game cards. I made a sketch of a thistle like flower during a  morning drawing exercise yesterday. I brought them both together to make a lovely print.

Test prints of flower layered on watercolor background. They sit beautifully together.
Pencil, ink and watercolors proved to be great combinations.
Pencil and ink for the thistle like flowers to keep that hand drawn sketch and loose feel.
