Hand Printed Echinacea and Color Play

In two previous post I have shown The SketchThe Cut and The Ink test Print.
As I mentioned I have shared my love of the Echinacea flower iink, in gouache and I have also used the motif in a silkscreen but I have never taken the time to make a block print.
Here is a the hand printed version of this lovely flower  in saffron, powder blue and chocolate brown inks on paper.

Drawing with cutting tools for Line and Shape

 Echinacea                                      by Velasquez©2013

I went ahead and started to carve the Echinacea sketches I made for last Thursday's post. You can see the post here.
I wanted to approach the each drawing differently in the  print it would make. I wanted to show  graphic shape in one and in the other I wanted just line as in the original sketch.
Each one shows its own strength in design. Love how they turned out.

Many test sheets for black ink on paper. I can see a few clean up spots but I do like the honesty of those imperfections from relief printing.
Tomorrow will bring some color play experimentation.

Thank you for stopping by.

Word Path • Words Replayed and New Art

"Be" on Blue Calm                                                                                                   by Velásquez©2013
This Word Path was in my head all week. It was one I had done last January and I couldn't shake it off. You can see it here. I wanted newness but I think it may have needed to present itself again! I gave it a new watercolor background so it could sit within the calm beauty of the blue watercolor.
It has been a week of talking with friends in the business about our creative style, our creative work  and the search to find where we fit in with doing what we love.
My son's teacher said it best when she spoke about the children she teaches and has taught she said
" They will become who they are suppose to be." That will work for us as well!  Loved that!

As a blogger, you are always in search of your authentic voice.

As an artist, you are always in search of your own style.
As a person you are always in search of your authentic self,
When these journeys are taken remember to be brave and be.

Everyone has a word path. One word leads to another.

Word Paths, a Friday feature showcasing possibilities in written words, creative process and artistic pieces.
My goal is to present three to five words or three to five lines.
I may go to seven words or seven lines but probably not often, only if needed.
I plan to work the Word Paths out artistically and process them to share with you here.
You can go here, to my first post on this project and see how it all started.

I was inspired by, of all things, a watercolor pad. I found this great rectangle size of 6 x 18 and felt it needed to written on.
This size truly lends itself to the flow of script writing. The pad is by Strathmore, Series 400, 140lb heavy weight acid free watercolor paper. Used it in its entirety today so I need to go buy another!

I used all the pages working on the "be" piece. For supplies I used gouache and a sumi brush.

Here is my word path for today

Be.                                                                                                                                                    by Velásquez©2012
Here is a the original transformed with a new watercolor background.

Revisting Echinacea Motifs

I have a thing for Echinacea, very graceful in its dance in the garden. My favorite flower as you know! I love to sketch it, paint it in ink, in gouache and I have also used the motif in a silkscreen but I have never taken the time to make a block print. I went into my sketch book and pulled sketches. I did manage to add a few new ones as a warm up exercise to before drawing straight on the block.

I drew on the block itself for the fun of it and it it helps to keep things looser than a transfer, for me.
Cant wait to start carving.

Sketching with Paint and Ink

Hot Chips and Ink              by Velasquez©2013
Enjoying a bit of ink play with a small painting I made a few days ago. I posted it on Instagram. I have been inspired by a warm palette lately.

Added my tried and true blue to cool things down a bit and loved the colors together.

I enjoy filing my sketchbook with ideas. I am so looking forward to see how this one turns out. Hot Chips and Ink is just the start!
